Han-Ji (Korean Paper) Art

Korean paper is made from a tree named DakNaMu. There are many types of Han-Ji Art.

They the most typical styles are the Han-Ji Doll, Han-Ji Painting,

and House hold art (furniture, kitchen trays, Pencil holder.....).

This is a description of how to make Han-Ji Art.

Han-Ji art consists of two stages, first building the structure and second adding the color.

Stage one

1. Make a decision of the size, style and use of the art

2. Draw the design on the hard board.

3. Cut the hard board.

4. Fabricate hard board pieces into chosen structure.

           *Paste

To make the paste use a wire whisk to stir wheat flour and water

and then boil until it gets thick, but not too thick.

Stage two

5. Put on white lining paper on the art from step #4

6. Cut and put color Han-Ji (Korean paper) on the structure.

7. Choose pattern

8. Put the pattern on top of the Han-Ji (paper) and cut out the pattern.

9. Bay-Jaup the pattern (add color to pattern)

*Bay-Jaup adds color to the pattern by adding different colors of Han-Ji to

each part of the background.

10. Paste completed pattern on structure made at step #6.

11. Make a weak paste and use to apply to the structure

12. Let it Dry.

*Drying time may change because of weather but usually 3-4 days.

13. Put on finish coats (2-3 cocst)

*this step add strength to the structure

Although the art is made from paper when finished it has the strength to stand on.

Han-Ji is a art everyone can do and it is made from the heart and soul.

To clean simply wipe off with a damp cloth; it can not be put in the dishwasher.
